What Hospitals Want You to Know - Before You Go.

Helpful tips for families navigating a hospital stay with an aging loved one.

Navigating a hospital stay – either expected or during an emergency – with an aging loved one can be stressful. During a recent podcast episode we covered quick tips for patients and their families with a long-time admissions director and patient advocate, Kelly Wheeler, to help everyone feel more confident during a hospital stay.

Here are the highlights:

  • Be Prepared: Keep a photo or digital copy of insurance cards and a current medication list (with dosages & doctor’s names) handy. Outdated info can cause serious issues.

  • Document Everything: Bring a notebook or use your phone to jot down doctor’s and nurse’s names, key conversations, and care instructions. This helps keep everyone on the same page.

  • Choose a Family Point Person: When multiple family members are involved, pick one person to receive and relay hospital updates. This streamlines communication and avoids confusion.

  • Ask Questions: Never hesitate to ask, “Why is this test needed?” or “What does this treatment do?” Clear answers = less stress and better care.

  • Emergency Ready? Make sure the power of attorney (POA) and healthcare directives info is handy, especially if your loved one might go to the hospital alone. It speeds up decisions when time matters most.

Bottom Line: Preparation and open communication can make a hospital experience less stressful for everyone. And remember: Advocate for your loved one – for their care and comfort – and keep asking questions!
